Teaching Philosophy/Goals
I am the primary instructor for the LSU International Studies Senior Capstone Research course, INTL 4003, and supervise only undergraduate research projects. My goal is to help all undergraduates develop useful research skills for the next level of their careers.
I also teach the introductory International Studies course, INTL 2000 - Contemporary Global Issues. My goal is to provide our students with the tools to understand the wide variety of global issues affecting the world today, and to build verbal and written communication skills that remain relevant in a time of increasing automation.
In addition to the academic experience detailed below, my background includes 25 years as a communications professional and television news producer. Read about my innovative topic generation method here.
I will help any undergraduate student research any topic, but I am particularly Interested in:
Military history and theory (all periods)
Ancient Rome
18th century France, Prussia, and the United States
Louisiana and LSU history
Sports
Ethical issues related to artificial intelligence
Any topic related to the completion of a Distinguished Researcher or Communicator project
Personal Research Interests
My research focuses on the enduring influence of Classical Greece and Rome on the organization, theory, and tactics of Eighteenth-century militaries and their leaders. My Ph.D. dissertation explored the international nature of this Enlightenment Era phenomenon and demonstrated how the practices and battlefield tactics of Classical Antiquity took a central - not peripheral - place at the cutting edge of Enlightenment thinking.
